How to Choose Your Giro Cycling Helmet
Choosing the right bike helmet depends on where you ride, how much coverage you want, and which features matter most to you, such as ventilation, visibility, or extra protection. Every Giro cycling helmet in the current range is certified to CE EN1078 (Europe) and CPSC (US) safety standards as a minimum. Whether you ride on the road, explore gravel tracks, head onto the trails, or commute through the city, this guide will help you find the right one.

Choose by Riding Style | Understand Protection & Technology | Find Your Size & Fit | Compare the Models and Choose Your Helmet
Choose by Riding Style
The right helmet depends on where you ride. Road helmets prioritise low weight, aerodynamics and ventilation. MTB helmets offer more coverage for technical terrain, from half-shell trail models to full face for enduro and downhill. Urban helmets focus on everyday comfort, visibility and clean styling. Kids' helmets include the same core protection features as the adult range in smaller sizes and simpler fit systems.
Best for: road cycling, training, club runs, racing, gravel, and XC
Road, Gravel & XC
Road helmets are designed for paved-road riding (training rides, club runs, racing, and long days on tarmac) with a focus on low weight, strong ventilation, and a secure fit. Some prioritise maximum airflow for climbing and hot days, while others lean more towards aerodynamics for faster riding. If speed is your priority, see our dedicated aero road helmets. All models include Mips® or Spherical Technology powered by Mips® and are certified to CE EN1078 and CPSC safety standards.
The XC & Gravel helmet category brings together two types of helmet that work well on varied terrain: road helmets (excluding the fully sealed Aerohead TT models) that offer excellent ventilation and low weight on longer mixed-surface rides, and open MTB helmets at the lighter end of the range that provide a touch more rear coverage without the full depth of a trail helmet.
What to look for
- Lightweight construction for long-ride comfort
- Good ventilation for warm weather and harder efforts
- A secure fit system that keeps the helmet stable
- An aerodynamic shape if speed is a priority
- Good eyewear compatibility
Good to know:If you ride fast on flat roads, prioritise an aero shape. If you climb a lot or ride in warm weather, prioritise vents and weight.
Best for: trail riding, cross-country, all-mountain, enduro, and gravity
Mountain Biking
MTB helmets offer more coverage around the back and sides of the head than road helmets, and are built for trail riding, cross-country, all-mountain, enduro, and gravity. The range divides into two types based on how much protection you need.
- Half-shell MTB helmets cover trail, XC, and all-mountain riding. They include a visor, deeper rear coverage than road helmets, and compatibility with goggles. For most trail riders, this is the right choice.
- If you ride enduro or downhill, a full face MTB helmet adds a chin bar that a half-shell cannot provide. The Coalition Spherical (810 g, 25 vents) is the more versatile choice for enduro, lighter and easier to manage between stages. The Insurgent Spherical (1,040 g, pre-preg fiberglass shell) prioritises maximum impact protection for dedicated downhill riding. Both full face models carry ASTM F1952 downhill and ASTM F2032 BMX certification.
What to look for
- Extended rear and side coverage
- A visor for sun, branches, and trail spray
- Good compatibility with glasses or goggles
- Full chin bar if you ride enduro, downhill, or bike park
- Mips® or Spherical Technology powered by Mips®
Good to know: If you ride trails, a half-shell gives you the coverage and visor you need. If you ride enduro or hit the bike park, step up to a full face.
Best for: commuting, e-bike riding, city cycling, and everyday transport
Urban & Commuting
Urban and commuter bike helmets are designed for everyday riding (commuting, city cycling, e-bike use, and everyday transport) with a focus on comfort, visibility, and practical use. Many models include integrated lights, making them ideal for riding in low-light conditions. The Bexley Mips and selected Ethos models carry NTA 8776 certification, which tests helmets at e-bike speeds up to 45 km/h, a higher standard than standard CE EN1078.
What to look for
- Comfortable fit for everyday riding
- Visibility features such as reflective details or lights
- Clean, understated styling
- Mips® protection
- On selected models, NTA 8776 e-bike-ready certification
Good to know:If visibility and practicality matter as much as the ride itself, look for integrated lights and an eyeshield. If you ride an e-bike, check for NTA 8776 certification.
Best for: family rides, school runs, skate-style riding, and young riders learning to ride
Kids
Children's bike helmets are designed for smaller heads, simple adjustment, and everyday comfort, covering family rides, school runs, skate-style riding, and young riders learning to ride. Many include the same key protection features found across Giro's adult range, in child-friendly sizes and designs. All models meet CE EN1078 certification and include Mips® as standard.
What to look for
- Easy size adjustment
- Lightweight construction
- Comfortable fit that encourages regular use
- Mips® protection, included as standard on all Giro children's helmets
- Colours and designs kids are happy to wear
Good to know: The best children's helmet is one that fits properly and gets worn every time.
Understand Protection & Technology
Every Giro helmet includes Mips® rotational protection in some form. The technology varies by model - from the entry-level Mips® Evolve Core found across most of the range, to the ball-and-socket Spherical Technology powered by Mips® in the highest-performing models.

Construction
In-Mold construction fuses the polycarbonate shell directly to the EPS foam under heat and pressure, creating one integrated unit. It's lighter and structurally more efficient than hard-shell helmets, and allows complex ventilation channels to be built into the shape. Standard across the Giro performance range.
Premium road and trail models add two further technologies: Progressive Layering, a dual-density foam system tuned for different impact energy levels, and Nanobead EPS, an ultra-fine foam formulation that enables thinner, more aerodynamic profiles without reducing protection. These two features appear together only in the highest-performing models: Eclipse Pro, Aries Spherical, Helios Spherical, and the Insurgent, Coalition, and Manifest in MTB.
What to look for
- In-Mold construction as a baseline for performance and recreational helmets
- Progressive Layering and Nanobead EPS if you want the most refined protection-to-weight ratio
Ventilation & Aerodynamics
More vents generally means better airflow, but the design matters as much as the number. Some riders prioritise maximum airflow, especially in warm weather or on long climbs. Others are happy to trade a little ventilation for a smoother, more aerodynamic shape.
- Hot weather or lots of climbing → prioritise ventilation (see road helmets like the Aries Spherical, 24 vents)
- Fast riding on flat roads → consider an aero bike helmet: the Aerohead Mips II is the most aerodynamic option in the range
- General use → look for a balanced all-rounder
Certifications
All Giro cycling helmets are certified to CE EN1078 and CPSC safety standards as a minimum. Every model includes Mips® protection, either Mips® Evolve Core or the premium Spherical Technology system. Full face MTB helmets such as the Insurgent and Coalition additionally carry ASTM F1952 downhill certification.

Find Your Size & Fit
A helmet only works properly if it fits properly
How do I choose the right helmet size, and how should it fit?
Measure the circumference of your head just above your eyebrows and ears, then compare that measurement to the size chart below for the specific model. Giro's Roc Loc® fit systems allow fine-tuning once you have the right shell size.
Once it's on your head, the helmet should sit level, about two finger-widths above your eyebrows, not tilted back. It should feel snug but not cause pressure points. The chin strap should be tight enough that you can fit one finger between the strap and your chin.

Giro's Roc Loc® systems share the same rear-dial adjustment principle, but differ in precision, active ventilation, and visual profile depending on the riding category.
